Antioxidants are molecules that help neutralize or prevent the negative effects of free radicals in your body. Free radicals are a product of normal metabolism, but can be very destructive. The presence of too many free radicals contributes to the development of disease and accelerated aging.
Therefore, antioxidants are necessary for maintaining your body healthy.
Dandelion contains a high level of antioxidant beta-carotene, which is known to provide strong protection against cellular damage and oxidative stress (1). They also rich in another category of antioxidants, called polyphenols, which are found in the highest concentration in the flower, but also in the root, leaves and stems.
Dandelion is useful in cleaning the liver of toxins and its renewal, maintains optimal levels of water in the body and balance of electrolytes. The root of dandelion contains bitter compound taraxacerin which increases the level of bile that is secreted by the gallbladder, helping the liver to cleanse (2).
Dandelion is also known for its diuretic action which helps the kidneys in cleaning toxins, salts and excess water by increasing urine production. This action inhibit the growth of microbes in the urinary system and replaces some of the potassium lost in that process.
Dandelion supports the cleaning of the digestive tract, particularly the effects of excessive consumption of fatty foods, coffee and drugs. Known as a “bitter tonic,” dandelion stimulates digestion and acts as a mild laxative. The bitter taste comes from mineral sulfur, which is necessary for protein synthesis, liver cleansing, enzyme activity, healthy skin, hair and nails.
