Human sebum contains 13% squalene as one of its main components. (1) Squalene and its hydrogenated derivative, squalane, are widely used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields. Both compounds are mainly produced from deep-sea shark liver oil and from distillate of olive oil. (2) Scientific studies have demonstrated the great potential of squalene and squalane due to their documented anticancer, antioxidant, transfer, detoxifying, moisturizing, and softening activities. Polyphenols have become attractive as ingredients in cosmetic formulations due to their ability to delay the aging process. However, their low solubility and poor skin permeability limit their use. Squalene enhances the functions of phenolic compounds, increasing the retention time of the phenolic compounds in the skin that have an anti-aging effect. (3)

Retinol is a key regulator of skin differentiation and growth during development as well as in adult skin. Bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol that is abundant in the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia plant. Bakuchiol, which has no structural similarity to retinoids, can function as a functional analog of retinol. Its functionality similar to retinol has been further confirmed for enhanced regulation of collagen type I and IV in a DNA microarray study, as well as showing stimulation of collagen type III in mature fibroblast models. Bakuchiol was tested in a clinical case study where it was formulated as a finished skin care product and applied to the face twice a day. Results showed significant improvement in lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, firmness, and overall reduction of photo-damage after 12 weeks of treatment, without the usual side effects associated with retinol therapy.
