Bergamot essential oil has a sweet-fruity, fresh-citrus aroma. It acts as an antidepressant, antibacterial, soothing, stimulating and relaxing.

REDUCING STRESS

A small study from 2015 (1), conducted on women in Japan, showed that inhaling bergamot oil mixed with steam reduces feelings of anxiety and fatigue. Similarly, an article published in 2013 in the journal Current Drug Targets (2) reported that aromatherapy with bergamot (among other essential oils) can alleviate depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders by signaling the brain to release dopamine and serotonin.

HELPS AGAINST FOOD POISONING

Linalool, a compound found in bergamot, can sometimes be effective in destroying types of bacteria responsible for foodborne illnesses. A 2005 study (3) investigated the effectiveness of bergamot in destroying several strains of bacteria on chicken skin and cabbage leaves.

The bacteria tested were:

Staphylococcus aureus

Listeria monocytogenes

Bacillus cereus E. coli

HELPS REDUCE PAIN AND INFLAMMATION

Linalool and carvacrol are compounds found in bergamot oil. A 2017 study review (4) analyzed the effects of several essential oil compounds on the response to pain and other conditions in people and animals. It was found that both linalool and carvacrol have analgesic, anticonvulsive, and anti-inflammatory abilities when used in various methods that involve topical application. The review also showed that potential toxicological effects of essential oils on humans require further research.
