Nettle is a perennial plant that is recognized by its heart-shaped leaves that are covered in small hairs. Dried nettle leaves are used to prepare tea.
Nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is a perennial herb that is commonly known as common nettle, dog nettle, stinging nettle, or burn nettle. It grows up to 150 centimeters in height. It belongs to the nettle family (Urticaceae), and its pharmaceutical name is Folium urticae.
It is recognized by its heart-shaped green leaves that are covered in small hairs. These hairs are filled with formic acid, and when the plant is touched, the hairs break and release the acid into the environment, or onto the skin of the person who touches them, causing a stinging sensation.
Nettle contains fibers that are very similar to those of hemp and wool, which is why it has been used in the textile industry for centuries. In many countries, housewives have used nettle to clean and wash glass, mirrors, and dishes. They would scrub the dirty surface with nettle, rinse it with water, and then wipe it with a clean cloth.
Nettle has a positive effect on immunity, but also on complexion, skin radiance, and hair. Large amounts of vitamins (especially A, C, B2), mineral salts, plant hormones, and enzyme secretin make nettle excellent for spring and autumn cleanses of the body.
It is rich in iron and is therefore suitable for relieving anemia. For medicinal purposes, the root, aboveground parts of the plant, and leaves are used, so the entire plant is full of compounds that have a positive effect on our health. Dried nettle leaves are used to prepare tea that has a positive effect on the normal functioning of the immune system and helps the body more effectively fight against negative external influences.
