The essential oil is a very strong expectorant that reduces the viscosity of mucus in the respiratory system. It has pronounced antimicrobial and antiviral effects, and is effective against pathogenic fungi.

Eucalyptus is commonly known as southern blue gum or blue gum, and is a species of flowering plant in the Myrtaceae family. It is a tall, evergreen tree that is endemic to southeastern Australia. (1) Unlike the re-distilled essential oil which can be irritative due to its strong pungent odor, the first distillation essential oil is much milder. Nevertheless, it is not recommended for use in children under the age of 2.
