Geranium leaves are steam distilled. The hybrid from the island of Reunion (known as “Bourbon”) yields essential oil rich in the alcohols citronellol and geraniol, and the ester citronellyl formate. Egyptian geranium, on the other hand, contains a higher amount of geraniol than Chinese geranium, while Chinese geranium contains a higher amount of esters than Egyptian geranium.
